Book Review: The Strawberry Thief by Joanne Harris

Book Review: The Strawberry Thief by Joanne Harris Quote: Food is the thing that unites us all, that brings us back together. Food is the thing we can provide when there is nothing else we can do. That’s why we serve it at funerals. To remind us that Life always goes on. The fourth book in Chocolat Series was delicious like it's prequels. We are back to our little southern French village where Vianne Rocher has dropped her anchor. The story begins with a death; the florist Narcisse and deed of his estate. Rosette Vianne's winter child, who is specially-abled teen has been left with the inheritance of a strawberry farm. This deed serves as the bone of contention between Narcisse's daughter and the Rochers. The novel pans out again during the time of Easter and it unfolds stories within stories of this village. Finally, the classic Joanne Harris style murder and old memories enter this world too. We learn a bit more of Francis' history and ...

the Deal, called family.

Every year the goddess with ten hands comes to visit the tribe called Bongalies. A tribe spread all over the world, loves eating sweets, fish, rice, and words. The goddess comes as daughter leaves as the mother brings a lot of emotions and excitement in the B genes. With her comes the headache of shopping and pandal hopping. None of which yours truly enjoys. Not only the goddess visits her family, she brings her children, her pet, and her children’s pet. My house is quite the human representation of that divine family. Our mother is as ferocious as the goddess, willing to kill and bite and rip for her children, flowers and pets’ sake. She has two daughters one who loves, let’s say anything related to material possession. Another who believes in burying herself in fiction to avoid public interaction. Again, my mom’s elder daughter has a handsome and short-tempered son-in-law who fills the vacancy of goddess’ war faring son. My mother doesn’t have a lion, but a Persian ...

Cotton Candy Comedy

February tickles in and the new year spirit leaves us with the gloomy bloom. It’s the month of love or in other words the most profitable month for the card makers, soft toy sellers and restaurants. Love either overflows or dries a human heart for first fifteen days of this small month. I who am in love with the idea of love finds imaginary wings growing out from my toes in this month. For years now my friends and I we have been gifting each other chocolates on valentine’s day. We can blame this flaw of ours easily on the Japanese and Korean rom-coms we grew up watching. My once walking mate and now my partner in quest of  self love, turns into over-feminized creatures in this month with me.  Valentine’s day is a big event in the life of loveless. By loveless I simply mean the love that comes from a lover. My family is strictly forbidden to enter my non-existent love life and express their suffocating love to me to counter my loveless comment. I love wearing red on...

dogs & god after Small Things

Photo Credit- To rightful Creator, I found it in google My fondness with dogs and other creature is a family heirloom that is encoded in my genes. The bag I carry to my university always has small packs of biscuits in it, I carry it thinking of possible what if situations- a long face, beady eyed creature comes wagging its tail at me? Or a hungry little puppy rolls at my legs, I choose to be prepared. Often at times those biscuits have even saved starving humans too after six hours of non-stop classes. Occasionally I have eye contacts with another species, the feline, they and I, we were match made in hell. They lock their eyes on mine and so do I on the marble eyes which they proudly flaunt when they are climbing up walls, running after birds or hiding behind the bush, we have our moments of mutual recognition and respect. The goats and the cows to seem to have found a spot in my heart, many a times I have chased them out of the garden with sticks for eating up the plants ...

Boiled Omelette

At twilight I peep out from the balcony and realize I ran out of my supply of bread and cucumber for next day’s lunch. Many people love food shopping in this world, among them my father is a champion when it comes to buying fishes. His ‘Bongali’ blood binds him to fish, every day he will go to bazaar and return with more than six overflowing poly-bags of fresh food items. Sometimes its avalanche of green leafy vegetables at other times coin sized fishes destined to cut down ones throat or simply an assault of snake gourds. Today it’s about my regular rant, my life’s biggest problem is with the word food, eons ago when I was a moving pumpkin I would devour anything given to me. I would relish it with such a pure conscious that my fragile heart was warmed up by layers of fat. Now that I am on proper BMI scale I dislike eating. So here I am sitting out on the balcony watching the sky turn dark and I expect the poetic mind to give some sweet words for my twitter poetry, but pops ...

On Green Tea and Cucumber Sandwiches

yesterday's lunch, green tea and cucumber sandwich, the glossy edit happens thanks to Instagram I have started to carry lunch to my university, when I say lunch I do not mean an elaborate meal that many of my classmates cook for or feed themselves in canteen. Almost a year back I technically moved out of my hometown into university life and since then I have been practically suffering from a serious but worthless thought almost every day. What will I have for lunch? My mind says I wish a cup of green tea for lunch as well. I who once was a legendary foodie have given up my lust for food for almost seven years now. I eat to keep my energy intact. So every day when I am faced with ‘thee’ question of lunch my peace strings tune into cacophonic ballad. It’s not like the choice laid before me to eat are versatile and healthy! I have to choose between one big belly filling of Rice Meal (something I am incapable of finishing ever) Bread-Omelet (which is actually...

Discovery of Kokum

Colours and intriguing shape are one of the most effective marketing tools ever. Had I not seen the white purple bottle shaped like a saline pouch with my buddy I would have never tasted the content inside it. How many times have I fallen prey to looks? If I count both figuratively and literally the answer would be countless times both in materialist and personal choices. The first time I saw advertisement of instant soup years back, I had to buy it and it was a terrible experience. I happily copied the actions of Anime characters and placed the bowl on plates and sat with folded legs to sip my soup. And the soup tasted horrible. But when it comes down to my elder sibling, she is a recurring victim of marketing strategies. Every time she would order some cold drinks for us to drink, they would always come with hot spices. Sometimes chilli made cameo too. But what made me pick up the mysterious drink sitting inside the refrigerator with other colourful drinks far ...

A year Older, not Wiser...

Today we complete one year. Well by we I mean my blog, my reader friends and me. Last year on the very same day we began a journey of words without a Aim in mind. I feel so proud that I did not give up midway. Right now with 49 self-published blog posts and a year-full of twisted tale I feel glad and thankful.  I began the blog on a very significant day- 2nd of October is the birthday of Father of Our Nation- M.K Gandhi. Well last year I did not choose this day, just like everything it was a random day. Last year I was angry, frustrated, bored, proud, arrogant and a mad. Today I feel happy, open to life, interested, quite humble- but still mad. I cant say that I look back and I can claim a lot in my satchel, but yes my blog saved me. Few days back I read about writing therapy as the best way to reform and counsel the self. Indeed my blog has been a way to vent out my initial anger against Pink College, my anguish against lost chances and finally putting the p...

the Egg-manic

Food the reason of living, as I said before, I live to eat..... Every food has its own tales to be tasted... There is one particular Food item,  no one can have enough...                       The miracle  of the first bite of an Egg is similar to the first bite of the Apple  by Adam and Eve....  They ate the Apple not because they wanted Knowledge. But simple, they could not resist the temptation at the view of the lovely Red Apple.                                 Today I write about my all time Greed EGG.  The big...

the MOUTH AFFAIR ......

When ever I munch down mouthwatering delicacies from my Hand to Mouth.  I have a self realization- I  have contributed few more extra fats.....     Throughout my life time I have been on the heavier side of the scale. Being a food lover, rather      FOODAHOLIC,  its hard to control my twisting tongue at site of delicious edibles.   I have tried my luck several times to cut the munching mania, with several methods and advises. But  " Smell rings the Bell in Stomach ."                          Being a Bong ( Bengali ) is a bliss, you have a never ending list of delicacies, so  your taste buds develop the sense of variety at a early age. We Bongs  are best when it comes to Mouth  Affair. You give us any vegetable  or any food item that you hate and we turn it into a dish arrived from the God's  Kitchen....
